Engineering Mathematics - Spring 2001

Text: Thomas' Calculus by Finney, Weir, and Giordano, tenth edition.

Grading: There will be three prelims, each worth 100 points, and a final worth 200 points. Homework and quizzes will also count for 100 points.

Academic Excellence Workshops: There is a COLLAB Workshop on Thursdays, 2:30 to 4:25 in Hollister 206. These could be a good place to spend time to help others and yourself understand and appreciate the virtues of calculus.

Extra Help: There are at least two resources that you can use for tutoring or extra help.

Warning: There are mistakes in the text on page 481, Table 6.1. The square roots in the derivatives of the inverse tangent and inverse cotangent functions should NOT be there.

Results from Prelim I: The grades for the first prelim are 89 and above is an A; 75 to 88 is a B, 60 to 74 is a C, and 50 to 59 is a D. The median grade was 78. There were 8 A's, 3 B's , 6 C's and 2 D's.

Results from Prelim II: The grades for Prelim II are 89 and above is an A; 75 to 88 is a B, 65 to 74 is a C, and 50 to 64 is a D. The median grade was 91. There were 12 A's, 3 B's, 3 C's and 2 D's.

Results from Prelim III: The grades for Prelim III are 89 and above is an A; 75 to 88 is a B, 60 to 74 is a C, and 50 to 59 is a D. The median grade was 82. There were 5 A's, 8 B's, 5 C's and 2 D's and one F.

Results from the Final: The grades for the Final are 160 and above is an A, 120 to 159 is a B, 100 to 119 is a C, below 100 is a D. The median grade was 136. There were 6 A's, 10 B's, 3 C's and one D. (NEW)

Results for the final grades: There were 8 A's, 7 B's, 3 C's, and one D. This was an average taking into account the homework scores, the three prelims and the final. There were adjustments made for people that came into the course late, or who were sick. (NEW)

Results for homework up to May 4: The points mentioned here are all the points for homework. The highest score is 456, and roughly 370 and higher is an A, 300 to 369 a B, 250 to 299 a C. For those of you that arrived late and did not hand in homework for the first few classes, we will find a way of factoring that into the grade assignment. Now there are 11 A's, 4 B's, 3 C's and the rest are in special circumstances and will be considered separately.

Homework: The following are the reading and homework assignments. The date below is when the section is covered in lecture. Homework assignments for a given subject are due the following lecture class period. It will be returned to you in lecture on the next period after you hand it in. For example, the exercises on sections 1.5 and 2.1 are due on 1/26 and will be returned to you on 1/29. Points will be subtracted for late assignments. Problems in paranthesis '()' are not to be handed in, but be prepared to discuss them in class.
