Enrollment Guide for Fall 2018

Having difficulty adding or changing a math class? Please read on for enrollment information and waiting lists, what to do when a class is full, and who to contact for help. Course instructors can not give you permission to enroll unless the course is listed in the catalog as “permission of instructor.”

For guidance in selecting an appropriate entry-level course, please consult First Steps in Math, your faculty advisor, or director of undergraduate studies Xiaodong Cao.

What To Do When a Class is Full

For the most current information on course availability, check Student Center. If all sections of the course are full, look for information under Enrollment Limits and Waiting Lists below. If the section you want is full and other sections are available, you may need to adjust the rest of your schedule to make room for an available math class, or you may need to reconsider taking an early morning, late afternoon, or evening class if they are available. If it's possible to fit an available section into your schedule, then you should do so. If not, ask for help. Understand, however, that you may not get your ideal schedule.

Keep in mind that students make a lot of changes to their schedules during the early part of the add period in August. Sections may open and close several times a day due to adds and drops. If you are interested in a specific time that is currently closed, you may find an opening if you check several times throughout the add period; however, you should only be attending the section that appears on your schedule in Student Center, and your schedule should be settled before the add deadline.

Enrollment Information and Waiting Lists

MATH 1110, 1120, 1910, 1920, 2210, 2220, and 2310 — These courses will have low enrollment limits during the continuing student pre-enrollment period (April 11-25) to save space in all sections for entering freshmen to pre-enroll over the summer; however, space will be added if an entire course fills up.

MATH 1110, 1120, 1910, 1920, 2210, 2220, 2310, 2930, and 2940 — We do not keep waiting lists for these courses nor for individual sections. If an entire course fills up during pre-enrollment or the add period, check again later in the day. More spaces will be added so students can self-enroll on Student Center and meet their math requirements. If you don’t find an opening after checking a few times (over a few days if during the add period), you should ask for help if the course is required for your degree. If the section you want is full on Student Center but other sections are available, you may need to adjust the rest of your schedule to make room for an available section. Keep in mind that you may not get your ideal schedule.

MATH 1300 (Mathematical Explorations) — Arts & Sciences students will be able to directly enroll in MATH 1300 through Student Center up to a limit of 30 students. All others should add themselves to the waiting list (not in Student Center) during the add period. More information will be posted here over the summer and a link to the waiting list will be added when add/drop starts in August. Any student who is unable to pre-enroll in MATH 1300 should be actively considering other options to fulfill their math requirement.

MATH 1710 (Statistical Theory and Application in the Real World) — Enrollment is limited to 25 students per discussion. If you are unable to add MATH 1710, you might consider another introductory statistics class, such as AEM 2100, ILRST/STSCI 2100, or PAM 2100.

MATH 3320 (Number Theory) and MATH 4220 (Applied Complex Analysis) — Students unable to pre-enroll will be able to add themselves to the waiting list (not in Student Center) during the add period. More information will be posted here over the summer and a link to the waiting list will be added when add/drop starts in August. Any student unable to pre-enroll should be actively considering other options.

MATH 4710 (Basic Probability) — Undergraduate seniors and juniors (class standing as of fall 2018) will be able to directly enroll in MATH 4710 through Student Center up to a limit of 45 students. All others should add themselves to the waiting list (not in Student Center) during the add period. More information will be posted here over the summer and a link to the waiting list will be added when add/drop starts in August. We fully expect to admit sophomores off the waiting list, but we may not be able to take everyone. Any student who is unable to pre-enroll in MATH 4710 should be actively considering other options, including possibly taking MATH 4710 in spring 2019 instead of the fall.

Other 3000-level and 4000-level MATH courses — We do not expect to keep waiting lists for other 3000-level and 4000-level MATH courses. If you are unable to pre-enroll in a course initially, check again at least once before your pre-enrollment period ends. Spaces may be added or students may change their pre-enrollment to another class and leave an opening. If you are unsuccessful during pre-enrollment, try again when your add period starts. In particular, there are usually some drops after the first class meets. You are welcome to attend one or two classes while you wait for an opening.

Who to Contact for Help

Contact Heather Peterson for assistance with 1000-/2000-level courses or Michelle Klinger for assistance with 3000-level courses and above. If you send email, please include your name, college, class standing, and any other details you think may help us prioritize your request.

The Mathematics Department will assist you if you are unable to resolve a conflict between a required math course and another required course for your degree. If changing your first-year writing seminar or PE class is possible and will resolve the conflict, then you should resolve the conflict on your own rather than seeking an accommodation for your math class.

Independent Study (MATH 4900 and 4901)

Students who wish to enroll in MATH 4900 (research) or MATH 4901 (reading course) must fill out an independent study form after meeting with the proposed faculty supervisor to discuss the goals and expectations of the project.
