What is nonlinear elasticity?

Wednesday, November 20, 2019 - 5:30pm
Malott 207

Nonlinear elasticity is the central model of nonlinear solid mechanics. Similar to the Navier Stokes equations (for fluids), properly formulated problems of the subject present unresolved mathematical difficulties. In particular, there is no known systematic approach for constructing weak solutions. I’ll present a sketch of the proper formulation and then indicate some of the difficulties and known results.
