We review the notion of the potential Borel complexity of an equivalence relation, and then give algebraic characterizations of the non-archimedean abelian Polish groups which are tame with respect to each potential Borel complexity class. This extends a characterization of Solecki and Ding--Gao, and answers several questions of Ding--Gao. This contains joint work with Assaf Shani.
