TA Preferences - Spring 2023

Graduate students who have been assigned to TA in the Math Department by their home department or unit should use this form to submit their preferences for a TA assignment.

To apply for a TA position: Those looking for support may submit an application for a TA position and should only submit this form after being hired and asked to do so. The Math Department does not hire undergraduates to TA, but we do have other positions available for undergraduates.

Teaching / Recitation Positions

Consult the Spring 2023 Class Schedule for lecture and recitation times.

Instructional TAs are needed to cover some lectures of MATH 1110 (Calculus I) and MATH 1120 (Calculus II). One lecture is a full-time job with a time commitment of up to 15 hours per week. In addition to class time, responsibilities include preparing lesson plans, developing a homework and quiz policy, handling all interactions with your own students, holding office hours, and helping to grade exams. An undergraduate course assistant helps with homework grading. Prior classroom teaching experience is required.

Recitation TAs are needed for the following entry-level courses: MATH 1106, 1710, 1910, 1920, 2130, 2210, 2220, 2240, 2930, and 2940. A full-time assignment will have a time commitment of up to 15 hours per week. In addition to class time (usually 3 sections, each meeting once a week for 50 minutes), responsibilities include grading homework and exams, proctoring exams, and holding office hours. Other common tasks might be to help maintain the course website, write solutions, or assist in preparing exam questions.

Non-teaching Positions

Full-time czar’s assistants are needed to help the czars of MATH 1110 and MATH 1120 manage administrative aspects of the courses — e.g., website, coordinating requests for make-up/extended time exams, communication with other instructors — and to supervise undergraduate course assistants (includes conducting meetings every other week).

Graduate student graders will be assigned to MATH 1340 (Strategy, Cooperation, and Conflict), most upper-level courses, and a few graduate courses. Responsibilities include grading homework, writing solutions, holding office hours, and perhaps assisting in grading exams. A full-time assignment will have a time commitment of up to 15 hours per week. Courses with low enrollment may be assigned part-time graders, but two part-time assignments can be combined to provide full support.
