Future faculty Alex Townsend, currently at MIT, is the recipient of the 17th IMA Leslie Fox Prize in Numerical Analysis.
His paper describes the first stable quasi-linear complexity algorithm for computing a two-dimensional Fourier transform with circular symmetry. It is applicable to medical imaging, electromagnetics, and the numerical solution of partial differential equations.
