Saturday Workshops for Teachers

Math 508 - Teaching Secondary Mathematics

406 Malott Hall

October 20, 2007

9:00-2:30

8:45-9:00         Welcome (juice and bagels provided)

9:00-12:00       This Is Not Your Father's Oldsmobile

                                    Presenter: Steve West, SUNY Geneseo

For over thirty years New York State has claimed to have had an integrated mathematics curriculum. The new Texas Instruments Nspire handheld computer allows a true integration of mathematical topics. The TI-Nspire empowers students to learn across multiple representations of a single problem – algebraic, graphical, geometric, numeric and written – allowing them to broaden their critical thinking skills and discover meaningful real-world connections.

12:00-12:30     Lunch (pizza provided)

12:30-1:30       Tests, from a Student's Perspective: Preparation, Test-taking, Anxiety

Presenter: Mike Chen, Cornell Learning Strategies Center

Testing is a difficult thing, for teachers as well as for students. An event that should be or could be a celebration of a student's learning (okay, maybe that's stretching it) instead becomes a struggle between adversaries. How do students deal (or not deal) with tests? What factors interfere with their studying and learning and test-taking? We'll discuss these issues and explore practical applications of test-preparation and test-taking techniques.

1:30-2:30         Measuring Angles: 6 Theorems for the Price of One!

Presenter: Dave Bock, Cornell Mathematics Department

How do we measure an angle – and what is it we're measuring? These innocent questions arise in the early grades when we first hand out the protractors. There are deeper issues involved, though, fostering themes that echo through geometry, trig, and calculus.
