Bio: Corinne Sheridan is a fourth year graduate student in the Mathematics Department at Cornell University, receiving her Masters there in July 2009. As a student in the algebraic number theory group, she has presented and is involved in the Number Theory seminar. Her research currently involves investigating a new method to study the rank of elliptic curves by using a function related to the L-function. She has served as a co-organizer of the graduate student Teaching Seminar and participated in Rural Tutoring outreach program, tutoring at Newfield Middle School. She completed her Bachelor of Science in mathematics at the University of South Carolina, as a student in the South Carolina Honors College, in 2006.

Research:

My research lies in algebraic number theory, a branch of mathematics which studies prime numbers in the context of algebraic field extensions.  In particular, I study properties of elliptic curves in the context of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer (BSD) conjecture, connecting the rank of the elliptic curve with the number of solutions modulo prime numbers, p.  For more details, please see my research statement.

Teaching:

In my courses, I challenge my students to not only learn the mathematical concepts expected of them but also to understand the reasons behind these concepts. Through my teaching experiences over many years, my approaches in the classroom are based on the understanding that every student can learn mathematics, when it is presented in a diversity of ways.
