http://www.math.cornell.edu/~demlow/112.html
Instructor and contact info: My name is Alan Demlow, and my office is located in Malott Hall 201. The best way to reach me is by e-mail; my address is demlow@math.cornell.edu. If you have to get ahold of me quickly for some reason, try 5-0126 during the day. If for some reason you should really, really need to get ahold of me during the evening (before 10), my home number is 277-3502.
Meeting time and place: Section 6 meets MTWR 11:15-12:05 in Baker G08, and Section 7 meets MTWR 12:20-1:10 in Baker G02.
Office hours and location: Office hours will be held Wednesday 1:30-3 and Thursday 1:30-2:45 in Malott 201. If you have questions outside of this time, I encourage you to e-mail me to set up an appointment, ask for extra help after class, or stop by my office if you're in the area (I'll normally be in my office from about 1:30-3 most afternoons except Mondays, though the only guaranteed times are office hours).
Course web page: http://www.math.cornell.edu/~web112/ Please bookmark this page as much important course information will be available here during the semester!
Homework collection and grading: Homework will be assigned for each week's material, and will be due by 2 p.m. on Friday of the same week. Late homework will be accepted with a 10% penalty up until the time the solutions are posted (note that in the weeks prior to prelims, there will be little time between the regular due date and the time solutions are posted). If you have extenuating circumstances (illness, etc.) which prevent you from doing a thorough job on an assignment before it's due, let me know as soon as possible and I can generally give you a little extra time. You may hand in your homework to me in class Thursday afternoon, during office hours, or to my folder in the math office (310 Malott Hall; please make sure you hand your homework in to the correct section number!). You are to hand in ALL assigned problems. The problems marked with an asterisk (*) will always be graded, and a few undisclosed non-starred problems will be graded each week as well. I encourage you to work on the homework together if you find it helpful, but please write up the assignments yourself.
Homework solutions: Homework solutions will be posted on the course web site (above) Monday afternoon of non-prelim weeks and earlier the week of prelims.
Quizzes: There will be short quizzes in class about once per week. These will be held at the beginning of class, and they may or may not be announced ahead of time.
Section grade: The course will consist of 550 points, including 3 prelims of 100 points each, one final exam of 150 points, and 100 points (about 18%) based on your performance in section. Of the 100 points determined by your section performance, 70 points will be based on your homework scores, 20 on your quiz scores, and 10 on your class participation.
Course Attendance: I expect you to be in class regularly and promptly, although attendance will not be recorded. I usually hand homework assignments, course materials, etc. out at the beginning of the class, so tardiness may result in you missing important information. Please be here on time!
