Spectra of Spherical Varieties

An interesting question in Lie theory is to describe the G-action on L^2(G/H) where G is a Lie group and H a Lie subgroup. I will explain a uniform conjecture about the answer to this when (G, H) is a spherical pair, and discuss some aspects of this conjecture, especially the connection with automorphic forms.
