Promoting Mathematics Awareness

Celebrating Mathematics Awarness Month

The Mathematics Awareness Month Public Lecture series is one way that we celebrate Math Awareness Month every April. Each lecture is in keeping with the national theme, most recently Mathematics, Statistics, and the Data Deluge.

The department also sponsors a T-shirt design contest at Ithaca High School. Students at the high school submit designs and the faculty there vote for their favorites. The finalists are brought to the Cornell Math Department, where the faculty, staff, and graduate students then vote for their favorite.

4-H Career Explorations Program

The 4-H Career Explorations Program introduces youth across New York State to academic fields and careers, while providing hands-on experience in a college setting. Graduate students develop and implement activities for this program, which is held on the Cornell campus every June and sponsored by Cornell’s Cooperative Extension.

Expanding Your Horizons

Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is an annual one-day conference designed to foster awareness of the opportunities for women in mathematics and science-related careers. Graduate students develop and implement activities for this program, which is held on the Cornell campus every April.  The conference aims to provide local girls (grades 7–9) with female scientist role models and stimulate interest in math and science through hands-on activities.
