Freshman Prize Exam

On February 26, 2001 the Mathematics Department sponsored the Freshman Mathematics Prize Exam. Several cash prizes were awarded. Congratulations to Asher Walkover ($150, first prize), Omar Nayeem ($125, second prize), Zhengyun Zhang ($75, third prize), Shawn Chen ($50, fourth prize) and Brian Lukoff ($50, fourth prize).

Harry Kesten Awarded Steele Prize

Professor Harry Kesten was awarded the Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement. This prize is one of the highest distinctions in mathematics and was presented on January 11 at the AMS Winter Meeting in New Orleans.

Gregory Lawler Accepts Professorship

The department is pleased to announce that Gregory F. Lawler, of Duke University, has accepted a position as a Professor of Mathematics at Cornell. Professor Lawler's primary fields of research are Probability and Statistical Physics. He will spend the fall semester of 2001 at the Mittag Leffler Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and arrive at Cornell in January of 2002.
