MATH 739: Representation Theory of Finite Groups (Spring 2006)

Instructor: Alessandra Pantano

Meeting Time & Room

The course is a first introduction to representation theory. The focus is on the simplest case, namely finite dimensional representations of finite groups, but the beauty of the theory already emerges.

Topics to be covered include: reducibility, Shur's lemma, character theory, restricted and induced representations, group algebras, representations of the symmetric group.

Throughout the entire course a considerable emphasis will be placed upon examples.
