MATH 6150: Mathematical Methods in Physics (fall 2008)

Instructor: Leonard Gross

This is not a "theorem - proof" type course, but will describe mathematical techniques with some reasonable precision.

The course will cover the following topics:

  1. Hilbert space and orthonormal bases.
  2. The Sturm-Liouville theory of second-order linear ordinary differential equations: Green functions.
  3. Generalized functions and the Fourier transform.
  4. Applications to the heat equation, Poisson's equation and the wave equation.
  5. Laplace transform.
  6. Asymptotic expansions. (If there is popular demand, this topic could be replaced by differential geometry.)

We will follow a set of notes for the course.
