Outreach Activites

John Hopkins University: Center for Talented Youth

I have presented and organized break-out sessions for the CTY Science & Technology Series for grades 7-12. Sessions are given during a day-long Saturday conference for interested students and their parents.

The sessions I have presented include Fibbonacci Numbers in Nature, Tilings!, and Playing with Polyhedra. I designed the Playing with Polyhedra session, in which students learned about the platonic solids by building examples out of pipe cleaners. We also discussed higher dimensional polyhedra (like the hypercube on the right).

Expanding Your Horizons

Expanding You Horizons is a weekend outreach program at Cornell University for female middle school students. The goal of the program is to increase interest in mathematics and science through hands-on activites. Details of the program can be found at EYH Website.

I participated in a workshop called Breaking the Incan Code which explored quipus, an ancient mathematical recording device made of knotted cotton cords. Data is encoded on the quipus based on the location of the knots and the types of knots chosen. Students decoded the quipus provided (without being precisely told what to do), and then created quipus that encoded their birthdays.

Cornell Numb3rs Project

The Cornell Numb3rs Project provides educational activities to accompany the popular television show Numb3rs. Each activity provides insight into an area or idea from higher math mentioned in the corresponding episode. These activites are aimed at an advanced high school audience.

4-H Career Explorations

Career explorations is a summer activity for 4-H members in which students engage in hands-on activities and learn about careers in math and science. Details about the program can be found on the Career Explorations website. In the math session, students solve puzzles and compete in mathematical games such as Hex, Nim, and Let's Make a Deal.

Rural School Tutoring Program

This program is designed to assist students struggling with mathematics in the lower income school districts surrounding Ithaca. I participated in weekly after-school tutoring sessions at area middle schools during the 2009-2010 academic year.
