MATH 7120: Seminar in Analysis: quantum mechanics for mathematicians (Spring 2011)

Instructor: Leonard Gross

This seminar is aimed at introducing quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, elementary particle theory and Yang-Mills fields to mathematicians.

Prerequisites: (1) High School physics. (2) Lots of mathematics, most importantly, differentiable manifolds and functional analysis.

The course will be run in a seminar style: From each according to her/his taste. To each according to his/her interest.

Topics to be covered:

  1. Classical mechanics.
  2. Electricity and magnetism.
  3. Quantum mechanics.
  4. Quantum field theory.
  5. Connections on vector bundles and Yang-Mills fields.
  6. Dirac equation.
  7. Elementary particles and group representations.

All experiments will be done in class. Equipment will be supplied.
