MATH 757: Topics in Topology (Fall 2004)

Instructor: Nathan Broaddus

Meeting Time & Room

In this course we will explore the topology and geometry of manifolds through the prism of foliations and laminations. Our focus will be on the rich subtopic of 2-dimensional foliations of 3-manifolds.

Topics include:

  • Definitions and examples of foliations
  • Existence of foliations for 3-manifolds
  • Reeb stability
  • Novikov's Theorem
  • Finite depth foliations

Prerequisites for this course are algebraic topology and minimal familiarity with 2 and 3 dimensional topology.
