Analysis and probability on fractals is an exciting new area of mathematical research that studies basic analytic operators and stochastic processes when the underlying space is fractal. The books Diffusions on Fractals by M. Barlow (Lecture Notes 1690, Springer, 1998) and Analysis on Fractals by J. Kigami (Cambridge Univ. Press 2001) and the expository article Analysis on fractals by R. Strichartz (Notices AMS 46, Nov 1999, 1199-1208) give an indication of the accomplishments in this area in the recent past. Research in this area is closely related to work in analysis and probability when the underlying space is manifold or a graph. The first conference in this series was held in June 2002 with over 50 participants.

The purpose of this conference is to bring together mathematicians who are already working in this area, and also graduate students and researchers from related areas who would like to learn more about it. Toward this end, the conference will include a mini-course intended to bring neophytes up to speed on the subject, starting with basic definitions and examples, and reaching to the frontiers of research. A tutorial set of lecture notes will be available at the conference (or before).

Format:

  1. Each morning there will be three half-hour talks on recent research.
  2. Early afternoon will have parallel sessions. A mini-course for beginners (two one-hour lectures) and each of the morning speakers will present elaborations, details, proofs, etc.
  3. Late afternoon will have panel discussions, problem sessions, contributed papers, etc.

The plan is to have at most four and half hours per day of scheduled activities, with the rest of the time free for informal contacts and discussions.

Parking: Parking Permits for the Ecology House parking lot can be purchased at check-in for $5.00 per day.

Meals: There is no meal plan. Participants may purchase meals at several campus eateries and many restaurants in Collegetown. Light snacks will be served during conference hours.

Financial Support: Some financial support will be available to a limited number of participants at least to cover the cost of accommodations (some support for travel expenses may become available later).

Please fill out an application form if you plan to attend, and indicate if you want accommodations and or financial support. There is no deadline, but applications for financial support received by January 15, 2005 will get preference. There is no registration fee.

It is recommended that all short-term foreign visitors to Cornell who are not receiving salary, obtain a B-1 (Visitor for Business) visa, this allows reimbursement for travel and subsistence if funds are available.
