Four-dimensional manifolds arise naturally in geometry and physics. A theme of research is to understand the connection between the geometry and the topology of such a manifold. In this talk, we'll discuss recent progress in relation to fundamental conjectures including one proposed by H. Hopf on the product of spheres and one regarding Einstein structures. All results are joint work with Xiaodong Cao.
