The theory of Banach algebras is fundamental to functional analysis. I will give an introduction to this beautiful area of mathematics and define all concepts from analysis involved. Then I will discuss connections with set theory, and will give an example of a statement about Banach algebras that is independent of ZFC.

This is a survey of work by Dales, Esterle, Solovay, Woodin, and others.
