Honoring Oliver

Thursday, October 14, 2021 - 7:00pm
Malott 532 (Lounge)

Join us for a celebration of the life and work of James Edward Oliver, a nationally renowned mathematician and teacher and a passionate supporter of women’s suffrage in the 19th century. Featured Cornell speakers include Laurent Saloff-Coste, professor of mathematics; Carol Kammen, Tompkins County historian and retired professor of history; and Elaine Engst, retired university archivist.

At Cornell, Oliver chaired the Department of Mathematics from 1871 until his death in 1895. He also helped found the Social Science Club and was a member of the University Ethical Association. As a far-sighted and morally engaged thinker and citizen, he played an important role in local politics and society. He is known for introducing Susan B. Anthony at the Tompkins County Political Equality Convention in 1894. He also taught a popular class in ethics at the Unitarian Church in Ithaca.

Following the talks, at 8:00 p.m., a plaque to honor Oliver’s contributions to women’s equality will be unveiled in the Math Library, where his portrait is located, with a catered reception on the lawn behind the A. D. White House to follow. In-person attendance is limited to Cornell students, faculty, and staff, due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Covid Safety:  Please review the following CU Event Covid Guidelines. Cornell employees attending indoor events must complete the Daily Check prior to attendance.  Face masks are required for all indoor events and recommended for large outdoor events.
