The mapping class group of a surface is a fundamental mathematical object, and you should be thinking about it. In this talk I hope to convince you of this statement and share some results about the mapping class group that got me excited about this object. In the talk some algebraic topology knowledge would be helpful, but is not required. Come for the pretty pictures, stay for the really beautiful results and arguments!
