Abstract: We consider various families of random unitary band matrices (CMV and Joye) and study their spectral properties. In particular, we investigate the distribution of the eigenvalues of these matrices and use them to construct matrix models for the circular beta ensemble. We also study spectral properties of these matrix models for beta approaching zero and infinity.
