Laver tables are certain finite left self-distributive algebras. They are
simple to describe and compute, but some of their basic properties — for
instance the freeness of their inverse limit — have only been established using
additional axioms of set theory. This talk will also connect left self-distributive
systems more generally to the study of the braid group.
