This talk will center on recent work on pointwise convergence of bilinear polynomial ergodic averages, joint with Mariusz Mirek (Rutgers) and Terence Tao (UCLA). Along the way, we will survey Bourgain's work on pointwise convergence of linear polynomial ergodic averages, conducted in the late 80s and early 90s.
