We look at a result by Hatcher and Thurston: calculating the mapping class group of a closed orientable surface. While the fundamental group or the singular cohomology of a closed orientable surface are relatively easy to compute, the same cannot be said of the mapping class group! We take a look at their ingenious solution after introducing the invariant.
