Proper mathematical illustration and animation withstand multiple layers of meaning. This talk will be an extended exploration of what constitutes meaningful mathematical illustration, with commentary on technique, pedagogy, and allegory. Examples from calculus, dynamical systems, topology, geometry, and more will be the principal players, with supporting characters from art, literature, and mythology.
