This talk will cover theorems of Birget relating to distortion in Thompson's group $V$. We will show that $V$ contains a subgroup isomorphic to the free group on two generators, $\mathbb{F}_2$, with linear distortion as well as a subgroup isomorphic to $\mathbb{F}_2 \times \mathbb{F}_2$ with linear distortion.
