A return to Cantor's paradise

Thursday, March 10, 2022 - 4:00pm
Malott 532 (Lounge)

Hilbert once said, “No one shall expel us from the paradise which Cantor has created for us.” The work of Godel and Cohen arguably did that - or at least questioned what Cantor's paradise was. This talk will discuss some of the major developments in set theory post Cohen which were aimed at finding a more satisfying foundations of mathematics. It will culminate in recent work of Asperó and Schindler which reconciles a pragmatic approach to settling undecidable mathematical questions with a more philosophically grounded approach.

Refreshments will be served at 3:30 PM.
