How do we classify all algebraic objects of a given type? One approach is to determine how an arbitrary object is built from more basic ones, and then to classify these basic objects. In this talk we will carry out a geometric version of this program for quiver representations. We will see how stability, a notion at the heart of geometric invariant theory, gives us a way to classify the building blocks of any representation by an algebraic variety.
