Mario Kart Geometry and Combinatorics in Type $B$

Tuesday, October 17, 2023 - 4:35pm

In this talk, I will explore delta-matroids, objects that generalize usual matroids; the bases of matroid theory are feasible sets in the world of delta-matroids, subject to the symmetric exchange axiom. Delta-matroids provide a gateway into combinatorics connected to root systems beyond type $A$, and we will turn our attention to two foundational examples: Eulerian delta-matroids and ribbon-graphic delta-matroids. This talk frames the works of Iain Moffatt and André Bouchet in the context of the beloved cartoon racing game Mario Kart. Who ever said theoretical math doesn't have its applications?
