Applying category theory to real life (for real)

Tuesday, November 6, 2018 - 4:30pm
Malott 406

When we think about category theory, we often imagine some very abstract piece of math, living high up in the clouds and with no connection to real life whatsoever. However, it can be a surprisingly good framework to model things like electrical circuits, chemical reaction networks, or Markov processes! In this talk, we will focus on how we can model chemical reactions using categorical notions. We will then look at the dynamical system associated to a reaction, and see how our categorical syntax allows us to extract valuable information regarding its steady states. No previous knowledge of category theory (or chemistry!) is required to understand this talk.

Refreshments will be served in the lounge at 4:00 PM.
